Introduction to HAO

The HAO Summit is a professional development, mentorship and networking programme for young arts and cultural workers in Southeast Asia. The HAO Summit plugs a gap in the growing Southeast Asian art industry: recognizing that while the art scene has undergone a boom in recent years, there remain few professional development opportunities for arts and cultural workers to help them cope with an expanding, changing, and globalizing arts market.

The HAO Summit is an activity-oriented, interactive programme with trainers and facilitators also being part of the group of HAO Fellows sharing and working together intensively in group activities over the three full days of the programme. Participants in the HAO Summit are challenged to think outside the box. Another feature of the HAO Summit is that participants interact with experts from diverse sectors, including policy-makers, business and management experts, and creatives.

The theme for HAO 2010 Art: The Social Vernacular, recognizes that arts and culture is inseparable from society, and reminds us that what artists and arts workers engage in, has an impact on wider society and that society itself is reflected in the various outcomes created by artists and art practitioners. This year’s Summit will take the form of a research communication project, carried out through a series of talks, workshops and activities highlighting the potential, utility and role of art in the present-day. Each day is curated around certain themes, including: innovation, artistic challenge, sustainability, art and business.

History of HAO
The brainchild of The Substation’s Associate Artist Khairuddin Hori, the first edition of HAO was presented in 2008 on Sentosa by The Substation and co-organised by Khairuddin and Audrey Wong, former artistic co-director of The Substation and Nominated Member of Parliament.

For this 2nd HAO Summit, The Substation, Khairuddin Hori and Audrey Wong are excited to welcome Villains Creative Agency as partners and curators. Villains, a creative collective founded in 2009 by individuals experienced in the fields of fine art, graphic design, filmmaking and events production, is conceptualizing the programme and selecting the speakers/ facilitators for the Summit.

Previous Edition of HAO
The last summit was held in September 2008 at Sentosa and had 21 participants from Southeast Asia. It was timed to coincide with the Singapore Biennale. Speakers and facilitators included: Marco Kusumawijaya (architect, Indonesia), S. Karthik (marketing & branding, India/ Singapore), Matt Mason (author and creative, UK), Lynette Pang (Singapore Tourism Board), Abdul Rahman Bin Mohammed Abdullah (Total Quality Management Specialist, Singapore), Sukaimi Sukri (web and interactive designer, Singapore), Emily J Hoe (marketing manager, The Substation, Singapore), Russell Storer (curator, Gallery of Contemporary Art/Queensland Art Gallery, Australia).
