The eternal rivalry between the tiger and the dragon continues, in some senses, to be played out in art today. Symbolizing Southeast Asia and China respectively, interesting issues have emerged in the artistic relationships between Southeast Asia and China. The recent years have seen the rise of Contemporary Chinese art internationally, which has had consequent effects on art from Southeast Asia. The panel discussion, comprising critics and curators from China and Southeast Asia, will examine the complex relationships between art practices from these countries. Using the three exhibitions currently on show at Osage Kwun Tong, by Cheo Chai Hiang (Singapore), Nipan Oranniwesna (Thailand) and Sun Yuan and Peng Yu (China) as a point of departure, the speakers will examine aspects of the recent art development from China and Southeast Asia, such as national identity, history and the market and their role in the development of art from these countries.
